Open Question: unable to register car in new york state due to insurance lapse?

I been paying car insurance but the insurance company had my old passat on the insurance instead of the honda accord that i had been driving. I never noticed that on the insurance card and now have had to surrender my plates. I need to register the car to go to work. I need help and think the insurance company messed me up.
